History:The Capital of India is divided in to Old and New Delhi. Old Delhi or Shah Jahanabad was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century. Delhi has been a centre of power since the 13th century. Delhi was invaded by many invaders, including the Persian Emperor, Nadir Shah, who sacked the city in 1739. The British seized Delhi in 1803 and during their reign they built many monuments like India Gate, Parliament House and the President's House. India Gate: This 42 metre high gate was built in 1911 and was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Formerly it was called All India War Memorial and was built in the memory of the 90,000 Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives in World War I. The names of the soldiers are inscribed on the walls of India Gate. Since 1971, an eternal flame keeps burning in honor of the immortal soldiers and is called Amar Jawan Jyoti.
Qutab Minar: Built by Qutbuddin Aibak in 1199 as a victory tower. It's still the highest stone structure in India with a height of 72.5 mtrs. There's a staircase running inside the minar, which was used to call the faithful to prayer.
Humayun's Tomb: Haji Begum, widow of the Mughal Emperor Humayun, built it in the 16th century. She hired Persian craftsmen for this job. Humayun's tomb is considered as a predecessor of Taj Mahal. Both Humayun and Haji Begum were buried in this tomb.
Red Fort: This red sandstone structure was built by Shah Jahan from 1638-1648. It has a wall with a perimeter of about 3kms and the River Yamuna used to flow by the eastern edge of the fort. Inside the fort the Diwan -i- Khas, Diwan -i- Am and Lahore Gate are to be seen on tours to Delhi.
