Location: Situated on the banks of Vembanad Lake. It's 64 kms North of Kochi, Kerala, India.
History: Alleppey, also known as Alappuzha, was founded by Raja Keshawadasan, Divan of Travanacore in 1762. Referred to as the Venice of the east, Alleppey is one of the most magnificent backwater sites of India. It's famous for its boat race. Dutch and the Portuguese were the initial rulers of Alleppey. Later, Maharaja Marthandavarma came to power and developed the infrastructure of the place. Alleppey is also famous for its coir factories.
Tourist Attractions: Alappuzha Beach, Kuttanad, Champakulam Church, Chettikulangara Bhagwathy Temple, St. Andrews Church, Krishnapuram Temple and the Backwater Cruise.
Alappuzha Beach: With Arabian Sea on the west and a vast network of lakes, lagoons and several freshwater rivers criss crossing it, Alappuzha Beach is full of natural beauty.
Kuttanad: It's an expanse of waterlogged land lying below sea level. It has a strong resemblance to Holland in terms of geographical features.
Chettikulangara Bhagwathy Temple: This temple is believed to have miraculous powers to cure diseases and grant wishes to the devotees. Hence, a large number of devotees visit this temple.
Krishnapuram Temple: Krishnapuram temple is a two-storied building. It displays the typical Keralan style of architecture.
The Backwater Cruise: The backwater cruise of Alleppey is its special attraction. The ride in backwater cruise with its exquisite houseboats is mesmerizing. The beautiful banks can be explored through these backwater cruises.
