Location: South west of Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.
History: Ajmer was founded in 145 A.D by Raja Ajaipal, one of the Chauhan kings. Ajmer was sacked by Mohammed of Ghori on one his periodic forays from Afghanistan, and later it became a favourite residence of the mighty Mughals. One of the first contacts between the Mughals and the British occured in Ajmer in 1616. Later the city was seized by Scindias and in 1818 it was handed over to the British.
Tourist Attractions: Dargah Khwaja Sahib, Ana Sagar, Adhai-din-ka-Jhonpra, Taragarh Fort, Nasiyan Temple, Brahma Temple.
Dargah Khwaja Sahib: The Dargah of Khwaja Mu'inuddin Chishti (1143-1235) is one of India's most religious pilgrimage sites. It's the tomb of the Sufi saint and is visited by people of all religions. Its construction was started by Iltutmish and later it was completed by Humayun. The tomb is made of white marble and the dome is made of a mixture of gold and marble. In the courtyard food is cooked in large pots.
Ana Sagar: This large artificial lake named after Anaji Chauhan was created in the 12th century by damning the River Luni. On its bank is a delightful park, the Daulat Bagh. It is set against a beautiful backdrop.
Adhai-din-ka-Jhonpra: This masterpiece of Indo- Islamic Architecture was created in two and a half days. It was largely built from pieces of Jain and Hindu temples. Although this mosque needs to restoration, it's still a masterpiece of architecture.
Taragarh Fort: About 3km from the Adhai-din-ka-Jhonpra lies Taragarh Fort. It gives a superb view over the city. It was built by Ajaipal Chauhan, the town's founder.
How to Reach:
Air: The nearest airport to Ajmer is Jaipur which is 135 kms away.
Rail: Most trains stop at Ajmer , as it's on the Delhi- Jaipur- Ahmedabad- Mumbai line.
Road:Ajmer is easily accessable by bus from places like Bikaner, Jaipur, Aligarh, Chittorgarh, Bharatpur, Jodhpur, Haridwar and Agra.
